HIstory

150 Years Strong: Building Tomorrow's Leaders Since 1875

Established in 1875, SS. Philip and James Catholic School (SPJ) has been a cornerstone of faith-based education in Canal Fulton for over 140 years. The school began with a modest enrollment of 12 boys and 16 girls, guided by a single lay teacher. This humble beginning marked the start of a longstanding commitment to academic excellence and spiritual growth.

Throughout its history, SPJ has undergone several significant transformations to accommodate the evolving needs of its students and the community:

1935

The original school building was replaced to better serve the growing student population.

1967

An additional section was constructed, reflecting the school’s expanding role in education.

1979

A second floor was added, providing more space for classrooms and educational activities.

The Sisters of Notre Dame played a pivotal role in the school’s development, staffing SPJ from 1883 to 1885 and again from 1941 to 1975. Their dedication laid a strong foundation for the school’s enduring values.

Today, SPJ is staffed by highly qualified, state-certified teachers who continue the tradition of delivering quality Catholic education. The school serves a diverse student body from various districts in Stark and Summit Counties, including Akron, Jackson, Massillon, and North Canton.
